BOBs Bully Yinz in Clash of WPL Titans

WPL Game of the Week - Week 2

April 17, 2016  – Fighting BOBs – 6 vs Yinz United - 1

7:30 PM KO @ Fairfax High School Stadium (Fairfax, VA)

The second week of the Spring 2016 season is in the books and for our game of the week, we headed over to Fairfax High School for a clash between two of the WPL’s top teams.  Yinz United has been a steady force over the last several seasons, capturing 2 WPL Helge Boes Cup over the last 3 seasons.  Fighting BOBs have pressured for the league championship each of the last 3 seasons, narrowly losing out in the Cup finals twice and semifinals once.

A stiff test was in the cards on paper, but unfortunately for Yinz, player availability did not allow them to showcase their full squad and the Fighting BOBs pulled away for a lopsided 6-1 victory that will leave Yinz eagerly anticipating a potential rematch in the Helge Boes Cup.

In the opening minutes of the match, Yinz looked to be going ahead as the BOBs gave up a PK in the first 5 mins of the game after a ball was played in behind the back line and the BOBs left back brought down a Yinz forward in an attempt to win the ball. The PK was saved by the BOBs Toresten Meuschke and the rebound was cleared for a throw-in. BOBs eased into the match and started to create initial chances after the early pressure from Yinz. Joe Taylor scored from an assist from Pierre Soubrier, who had made an overlapping run down the sideline, beat a Yinz  defender in a 1v1, and slotted a pass across the box to Taylor  for the tap in. The second goal came from Pierre Sobrier again who drove down the wing for a cross into Sam Forline for the finish. BOBs created other chances in the half to extend the lead but were unable to finish from close range and the score stood 2-0 BOBs at half.

In the second half, BOBs continued to test the Yinz back line with runs from their forwards. Yinz played a high line so delayed runs from the forwards and well-timed passes exploited the weakness of their offside trap. Fighting BOB’s Sam Forline notched two goals off assists from Stefan Hock and Julian Sisman in the first 15 minutes of the second half.  Both goals came from beating the offside trap and laying the ball off for the incoming runner). The BOBs Nolan Rodman scored the goal of the game with a 35-yard rocket in the top corner past the outstretched hands of Yinz keeper. A loose ball bounced towards him in the middle of the field and he ran on to the ball at full speed. Matt Arrington capped off the scoring for Fighting BOBs by following up on his own rebound for his team’s sixth goal of the match. Yinz were able to pull one back on a goal by Sam Agre with 10 minutes remaining in the match off a scramble in the box to make it 6-1 but the comeback was not possible.

Check out the league standings for other scores.  After two weeks of Premier league action, only ASA Reds have secured all possible points leading into week 3.  Next week’s game of the week will feature a rematch of last season’s Helge Boes Cup final with reigning champion Capital City FC taking on 9-time champion and last season’s runners-up, Dulles Sportsplex Aegean Hawks FC.
