Sunday, December 10th, 2017, Long Bridge Park #1
Aegean Hawks FC have won their 10th WPL title (2nd in the Helge Boes Cup era) with a 3-2 victory in AET over #1 seed Yinz United. The Hawks went down early in the match off a defensive error, but quickly equalized off a free kick that ricocheted off the Yinz keeper and allowed the Hawks Ernesto Marquez to slot home the rebound for a 1-1 scoreline that stood until halftime. The Hawks exerted control in the second half and scored a go-ahead strike after a long sequence of team passing that found David Rosenbaum firing home at the top of the box for a 2-1 lead. Yinz equalized in dramatic fashion with 10 minutes left in regulation off a free kick into the box which was punched into the back of the net. The score stood at 2-2 through regulation and both squads entered AET resolute. In the 2nd stanza of OT, the Hawks struck the go-ahead goal when Ernesto Marquez was slipped in through the wing and slotted a ball across the 6 yard which was met by teammate Draymond Washington and buried into the Yinz net. After 120 minutes of play the score stood 3-2 and the Hawks celebrated their victory. The Fall 2017 WPL title is the Aegean Hawks first league title since the Spring 2014 seasion. On behalf of the entire league, congratulations to Yinz United on an outstanding season that saw them reach the Helge Boes Cup final as the lone undefeated team. We hope all WPL squads will consider participating in the rich tradition of the Maryland Cups (Stewart and Rowland).
